Presidential Election and the Web Monday, Feb 4 2008

I was extremely intrigued when I saw the title of this article on my RSS feed. The Presidential Election of 2008 is without a doubt the most talked about event in the media. One cannot turn on the news without hearing about “Senator this” and “Primary that”. Especially since tomorrow is Super Tuesday, the election race is heating up. What I thought was interesting about the article was that it discussed which candidates were receiving the most traffic on the web. Presidential races of long ago never had to worry about the Internet. Now, every candidate has to have at least one webpage! This article proves how much technology is changing every aspect of our lives–especially who we elect as the next leader of our country.

Virtual Environments Monday, Feb 4 2008

One of the most interesting topics that I have read about since putting together my social bookmarking site has been the topic of virtual environments. I had seen the icon for Second Life on the desktops at school, but I never wondered enough to test it out. Now that I have read more about the reality and usefulness of virtual environments, I understand their purpose and can see the possible benefits gained from such an application. I will admit that initially I thought of Second Life as another version of the Sims, or some other computer game. I am constantly amazed by the innovation and potential of the web.

MySpace Monday, Jan 28 2008

One site I have found particularly interesting discusses the rapid growth of the social networking site, MySpace.  I never got into the MySpace scene, but I know that it is extremely popular.  The article discusses how MySpace will be expanding internationally in the near future. I thought that the topic of MySpace expansion was relevant to our class because of the ability of users to share information with others. Users can provide links and photo galleries and simply communicate with others with similar interests. Just like the blogs and social bookmarking pages we have made in class, MySpace is just another new and exciting form of communication that utilizes the web.

My First Entry Thursday, Jan 24 2008

Before this class began, I knew absolutely nothing about socialnetworking. The article I’ve linked talks about how popular and how much socialnetworking is growing.  I use Facebook, but other than that, I don’t know much about the sites available for socialnetworking. Hopefully after this class I will be more aware of what is out there on the Web.
